Our country is a mess here in 2023. And it’s not because we’ve “Turned our backs on God” as many conservative Christians like to spout off and say. It’s because organized religion is a scam. A fraud. A way to make weak-minded people angry and hypocritical, and often to justify their racism and bigotry.

People have misused religion for centuries. From the earliest days of Christianity and other religions, people have used the idea of an omnipotent god, Heaven, and Hell to scare people into submission. They have instilled fear in so many about an afterlife full of fire, torture, and constant turmoil.

I had to break it to you, but it’s all bullshit.

The blind faith and purposeful misinterpretation of the Bible by those who truly believe in all of this is utter ignorance. The idea that you have a mansion waiting for you up in Heaven with streets paved with gold is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Doubly so if you think that being shitty toward LGBTQ people helps you reach Heaven’s zip code when you die.

I explain this a bit more in detail in this piece I wrote last month. Please check it out if you haven’t read it yet:

Religion is a Crutch For Weak-Minded People
Mentally Strong People Don’t Fall For the Hypocrisy of Religion

Most Christians seem to enjoy being terrible toward those who practice other religions besides Christianity. As if any one of the thousands of other religions couldn’t possibly exist or be right? The cockiness and the way many Christians view other people’s differing religious beliefs are one of the reasons many tend to avoid church at all costs.

I have no desire to hang around people who use religion to make the world a less accepting, worse place. You can tell me that I’m lost and that I’m going to burn in Hell for my beliefs. Just like I can tell you to read a book besides the Bible and go fuck yourselves.

I admire those Christians who actually walk the walk, though. Anyone who chooses to use their religious beliefs to make them a better human being, you have my respect. This applies to those who practice any religion, not just Christianity. Sadly, far too many weaponize their religious beliefs and become worse humans toward others because of them.

Why do people even bother with religion if it only makes them worse, terrible people? There are a number of reasons why we are where we are thousands of years later as people of faith. Here are a number of reasons why religion has made humanity worse and is the biggest scam on our planet.

Religion Was Created to Control the Masses

If you can make them fearful through religion, they’re easier to control.

This goes way back to the beginning of humanity. It was far easier for a king or ruler of a kingdom to have the masses submit to his rules by propagandizing religion. You could control the masses by causing them to live in fear.

When you have the majority of people scared to death of Hell and instill in them the belief that a divine god is going to punish them for not following along with the program, it’s easier to control them. When the masses are controlled, they are much less likely to rebel. This can keep a ruling family or political party in power for a long time.

Religion Was Used to Justify Greed and Land Conquest

Nothing like justifying murder, theft, and genocide because God wants you to do it. Photo: Jean Colombe, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons
Look back through history at the Holy Wars, Crusades, or any number of instances where large armies went and slaughtered tons of people. Most of them came about due to the prevailing attitude that God or some other deity willed genocide to occur.

This is the biggest load of bullshit in human history. A moral and just god would not want innocent men, women, and children murdered in his/her name. An omnipotent deity would have nothing to do with immoral, illogical men claiming that they are committing genocide, rape, and theft in a god’s name. He’d probably say, “STOP DOING THIS SHIT IN MY NAME!”

Christianity Insists on Stealing 10% of Your Income

This smug prick put an ATM in his church. They’re not even trying to hide their agenda, anymore.
For churches that are supposedly “non-profit” and don’t have to pay taxes, they sure seem to enjoy making money. Just ask Joel Osteen or Franklin Graham about that. Those wealthy sons-of-bitches are going to be in for a rude awakening when they attempt to pass through to the Kingdom of Heaven in the Armani suits they were buried in.

A church that actually uses the money they earn to help feed the poor, house the homeless, and take care of people in need is rare. I read an article recently about how the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons) was found to be using less than 10% of its tithing profits to actually help the poor. That’s sick and wrong.

Churches Are Tax-Exempt

Churches are exempt from paying income taxes. Perhaps I should get on the idea of starting my own friendly little cult. Image by Steve Buissinne from Pixabay
This one blows my mind. Because churches and religions are considered charitable organizations, they are tax-exempt. I kind of get it, when it relates to churches that are actually doing charitable things and giving money to help the needy, sick, and poor.

But what about megachurches? Why should the pastors of these churches have mansions, vacation homes on the beach, supercars, and private jets without having to pay taxes? And why should hateful, bigoted, Evangelical-type of churches get any sort of tax break to allow them to more easily spread their vitriol and hateful messages?

Fuck all of that. We need to tax religious organizations. For small, low-earning churches, a negligible, tiny amount. For Osteen’s megachurch and those like it, half. Hit them where it hurts, in their greed.

Many Religious People Purposely Misinterpret the Bible to Justify Their Racism and Bigotry

The MAGA crowd tends to be religious in their beliefs, which are often racist and bigoted. Photo by Michael Anthony: https://www.pexels.com/photo/people-holding-red-and-white-banner-6796924/
Herein lies the biggest reason I’ll never participate in organized religion or attend a church again. I can’t stand most of the people who attend. Sadly, the majority of Christians or other fake-ass, hypocritical religions have the worst people attending their services.

I have a friend who lives in the Deep South. The stories I’ve heard from him about his Evangelical parents and their beliefs are disgusting. They spew racism and bigotry in their homes, at lunch after church, and any time they see fit. They are particularly horrible toward LGBTQ citizens.

I couldn’t sit through a sermon and hold my tongue in front of such ignorance. I’d have to jump up and say something, and it wouldn’t be pretty. I’m assuming that yelling “That’s fucking bullshit!” would likely get me escorted out of the premises. And fine by me. I’d never weaponize my religious beliefs against anyone.

Organized Religion Makes a Mockery of Humanity
Check the lyrics out on this one. I couldn’t agree more, even 32 years later.
Guns ‘N Roses said it best in their 1991 song, “The Garden of Eden”. Axl Rose was quite critical of his religious upbringing and the abuse he suffered at the hands of his very religious stepfather.

Most organized religions make a mockery of humanity
Our governments are dangerous and out of control
The Garden of Eden is just another graveyard
Said, if they had someone to buy it
Said, I’m sure they’d sell my soul

That’s the bottom line for me, regarding religion. It’s an outdated, hypocritical model of a pyramid scam. One person is likely gaining wealth while preaching the prosperity angle that never materializes for most followers.

I get that people fear death. I realize that most prefer to have a belief in an afterlife. Sadly, the negative aspects of Christianity and other religions far outweigh the good it does for marginalized people or those who choose not to practice one specific faith.

I’ll choose feeling spiritual over contributing to greed, control, and ignorance. And again, for those who use their religious beliefs to care for all humans and not to judge them, keep it up. We need more people like you on our planet. &:^)
